The geum (衿) was probably what the old writings call the hwijik (徽織). The Shi jing says, "Woven patterns and bird emblems." The commentary says, "Jik (織) is the hwijik, and jojang (鳥章) is the pattern of hawks and falcons. Generals and those below them all attach it to their clothes." The Shi ji and the Han shu call it gichi (旗熾), and chi (熾) and jik (織) are different characters with the same sound. The nine banners of the Sichang in the Zhou li each had a different thing painted on them, and the hwijik was there to tell one from another. In the state it showed a man's place at court, and in the army its form was copied and made, and men were clothed in it to be ready for death.
The hwijik of the people of Silla were told apart by colors such as blue and red. Its shape was like a half moon, and gye and red were attached on top of the garment. The rule of its length is not known in detail.

For the hwa of a general the name of the thing is not given, and the number is sometimes many and sometimes few, so its meaning is not known in detail. The bell was set on the pack horse when they went along the road, and some call it a tak (鐸).
