After a month I reached the country of Kushinagar (拘尸那國). It is the place where the Buddha entered nirvana. That city lies waste, and no one lives there.
A stupa was raised at the place where the Buddha entered nirvana, and a meditation master (禪師) sweeps and washes there. Every year on the eighth day of the eighth month monks and nuns, clergy and laity, go to that place and set out a great offering. Banners appear in the air above it, more than can be counted, and the whole crowd sees them together. On that day those who set their hearts on the Way are many.
West of this stupa there is a river, the Iravati (伊羅鉢底). Its water flows south for two thousand li before it enters the Ganges (洹河). On all four sides of the stupa the tracks of people are cut off and no one goes there, and the woods are very wild, so that those who go there to worship are harmed by □ rhinoceroses and great tigers.
Thirty li southeast of this stupa there is a monastery named Sabandan Monastery (娑般檀寺). There are □ and more □□□□□□, and they always offer that meditation master clothing and food, so that the offerings beside the stupa may go on 〈The text breaks off here. What followed has not survived.〉
