Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 1 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.

揭職國。東西五百餘里。南北三百餘里。國大都城周四五里。土地磽确陵阜連屬。少花果多菽麥。氣序寒烈風俗剛猛。伽藍十餘所。僧徒三百餘人。並學小乘教說一切有部。

The country of Jiezhi is more than five hundred li from east to west and more than three hundred li from north to south. The great capital city of the country is four or five li around. The land is barren and stony, and hills and mounds run one into another. There are few flowers and fruits, and beans and barley are plentiful. The climate is bitterly cold, and the customs are hard and fierce. There are more than ten monasteries and more than three hundred monks, and all of them study the Sarvastivada school of the Lesser Vehicle.

2The road over the Great Snow Mountains

東南入大雪山。山谷高深峯巖危險。風雪相繼盛夏合凍。積雪彌谷蹊徑難涉。山神鬼魅暴縱妖崇。羣盜橫行殺害爲務。

Going southeast, one enters the Great Snow Mountains. The valleys are high and deep, and the peaks and crags are perilous. Wind and snow follow one upon another, and even at the height of summer it is frozen. Piled snow fills the valleys, and the narrow paths are hard to cross. The mountain gods and the goblins work their harm without restraint, and bands of robbers range about and make killing and hurting their trade.

行六百餘里出都貨邏國境。至梵衍那國。

After more than six hundred li, one comes out of the border of the country of Duhuoluo and reaches the country of Fanyanna.
