The Country of Bennafatanna
The country of Bennafatanna is more than four thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is more than thirty li around. The people who live there are many and thriving, and pools and houses and flowering groves lie here and there among one another. The land is low and damp, and planting and reaping grow well and thick. The bansuo fruit is plentiful and is also prized. That fruit is as large as a winter melon, and when it ripens it is yellow and red. If it is split open there are several tens of small fruits inside, as large as a crane's egg. If one breaks these too, the juice is yellow and red and the taste is sweet and good. Some hang on the branches, as the many fruits bear their fruit, and some hang at the root of the tree, as the fuling lies in the earth. The climate is even and mild, and the custom of the people is to love learning. There are more than twenty monasteries and more than three thousand monks, and they work at both the Greater Vehicle and the Lesser Vehicle and study them side by side. There are a hundred temples of the gods, and followers of other ways live mixed among them, and the Nijian who go naked are truly many in their bands.
2The monastery of Bashipo
More than twenty li west of the city there is the monastery of Bashipo. Its courts and halls are open and wide, and its terraces and pavilions are lofty. There are more than seven hundred monks, and all of them study the teaching and the Law of the Greater Vehicle. Many of the famous monks of great learning within the borders of East India are here.
3The stupa of King Wuyou and the image of the bodhisattva Guanzizai
Not far from its side there is a stupa raised by King Wuyou. It is the place where long ago the Tathagata spoke the Law for three months for the gods and for men. Sometimes when a fast day comes, a bright light shines there. Beside it is the place where the four Buddhas sat and walked, and their traces are left there. Not far from here there is also a shrine, and within it is made an image of the bodhisattva Guanzizai. Its holy seeing hides nothing and its spirit answering has its proofs, so that people from near and far give up eating grain and make their prayers there.
From here one goes east more than nine hundred li and crosses a great river, and comes to the country of Jiamolupo.
