Da Tang Xiyu Ji (Great Tang Records on the Western Regions) Book 12 The record Xuanzang laid before Emperor Taizong of the Tang after seventeen years of walking through the Western Regions and India, a hundred and thirty-eight countries in all. It is the stuff from which Journey to the West was made, but what stands here is not monsters — it is the compass and the climate and the speech and the faith of one country after another. The road runs two hundred years after Faxian and eighty years before Hyecho.
The country of Kuoxiduo is old land of the country of Duhuoluo, and it is a little less than a thousand li around. The great capital city of the country is more than ten li around. There is no great ruler, and the country is subject to the Turks. The mountains are many and the river valleys narrow, and it is windy and cold as well. Grain is plentiful, and flowers and fruits thrive. The nature of the people is rough and fierce, and their customs have no law or measure. There are three monasteries, and the monks are few and rare.
從此西北,逾山越谷,度諸城邑,行三百餘里,至活國。
From here to the northwest, crossing mountains and passing through valleys and going by cities and towns, going more than three hundred li, one reaches the country of Huo.
